Twin Cam or Quad Cam?

Kinja'd!!!

So the other day I posted about a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , that would be a throwback to the AE86 Corolla GT-S factory vinyl.

Kinja'd!!!

In my last post I said I wanted to go with “FR-S TWIN CAM 16,” all of which is accurate to the car.

Kinja'd!!!

Then I got to thinking. Yeah the FA20 is a Twin Cam DOHC engine, but it does have 4 cams. So wouldn’t it technically be a Quad Cam? So I had my buddy do another mock-up.

Kinja'd!!!

I like that this adds another element to the modern/retro theme, but I want to be accurate above all else.

So what say you, Oppo? Is an FA20 Twin Cam or Quad Cam? Which do you prefer?

I’d say it’s quad, personally, but either describes something of the overall picture.

I’d say twincam. It’s got two cams per cylinder, so twincam.

Keeps things simpler so it's just OHV, SOHC and DOHC (excluding the oddball Riley Twincam with it's two cams in the block...)

Definitely twin cam. Also, I missed the original post, but I really like the look of that.

I’d go with Quad Cam.

Yeah, there are still only two cams operating each set of valves.

Two cams per cylinder would octocam.

And that would be awesome because 8 > 4.

Thanks!

I’m guessing it’ll take us a few tries to get the placement right, but luckily I have a buddy who will cut vinyl at cost for me since he likes the idea. haha

You could go the Chevy 3.4l route with “Dual Twin”

That would be awesome! haha

But really this is all semantics. It depends on whether we’re counting the cams by number per cylinder bank in the engine (4) or by the number used to operate the valves in the overall system (2).

Add weight and complexify. That was the saying wasn’t it?

Should say two cam lobes per cylinder...

I would do “twincam” as that term usually refers to a each cylinder bank.

Just like if you were going to say you have a four valve head. You don’t need to say “per cylinder” every time.

Lol I think I’d be getting a bit off base there. Also, since the Toyobarus are also nicknamed “Twins” it could befuddle the message a bit. haha

Single cam FTW

In your situation, Quad.

Since they are both correct. Go with the graphic you like the best. I don’t like the way the I in “TWIN” is hard to read, so I’d go with “QUAD”. Also, I just thought of 16 is the valve count for the engine so go with the cam count of the engine.

Toyota’s way of dealing with it:

“Four Cam”

I’m leaning toward QUAD for all of those reasons too. Although we could space the lettering in “TWIN” when we actually apply the vinyl. But yeah, since the valve count is of the overall number of valves in the engine I think QUAD makes more sense for the sake of consistency.

I like it! Maybe go a point heavier on the lines.

Don’t know what to say on the twin vs. quad argument. Twin is retro throwback, but you’ll have to listen to pedants saying “well technically...”

If you’re patient enough to deal with those people I like twin better.

Yeah, the actually font sizing, spacing, etc isn’t final. Was just a quick mock-up in photoshop by a buddy. I’m going to be ridiculously meticulous on the actual vinyl. haha

Yeah, that’s the one thing that’s got me teetering on the edge between Twin or Quad.

Lol hey!

You have a very nice AE86. I’d love an example like yours to park next to my FR-S.

Appreciate your input on the vinyl, still deciding if I’ll do it or not. I’ve got the Watanabes now, and they look awesome. I just have a lot of other priorities ahead of the vinyl right now. haha
